What is National Bison Month?
Every July, people across the country come together to celebrate one of North America’s most remarkable conservation success stories.
National Bison Month honors the American bison, which was named the national mammal of the United States in 2016.
Once numbering in the tens of millions, wild bison were pushed to the brink of extinction during the late 1800s. Through the efforts of Tribal Nations, ranchers, conservationists, public lands, and dedicated organizations, bison have made an extraordinary comeback.
Today, National Bison Month is an opportunity to learn about their history, celebrate their cultural significance, support ongoing conservation, and discover why bison continue to shape the landscapes they call home.
Whether you visit a herd in person, read a new bison fact, complete a family activity, or stop by the North American Bison Discovery Center, every celebration helps share the story of North America’s largest land mammal.
